My studio and vintage Vandercook No. 4.
I'm a small independent book publisher, letterpress printer, and artist living in western Wisconsin near the Twin Cities metropolitan area. I work in a variety of mediums including relief printmaking, photography, and mixed media. Some of my work is collaborative. “The Little Book of Hen: A Beginners Guide to Backyard Chickens” is my most recent collaboration with author, Patricia Cumbie. This illustrated, limited edition, hand-bound, letterpress book features marbled end papers by Sally Power.
As an independent book publisher, I also design, print, and hand bind fine press books of poetry under the title Goat Back Press. Recent commissions include a collection of poetry by the Swedish Nobel Laureate, Harry Martinson, translations by Robert Hedin, titled “The Cable Ship and Other Poems.” Other commissions include two collections of poetry by Robert Hedin, “The Eighth at Saratoga,” and “Traveling Light,” with illustrations by Art Kenyon; “White Sky,” by North Carolina poet, Carter Smith; and “Upship,” a four poem pamphlet by Robert Hedin with illustrations by Art Kenyon. In 2019, I hand-set and printed a letterpress broadside for Gwen Westerman, the 2022 Poet Laureate of the State of Minnesota titled, “Quilt Label.” I also designed and carved a number of wood engravings for the late letterpress printer and poet, Scott King of Dragonfly Press.
