Today this view is still expansive and the river has retained some of its wildness, but the landscape is not the same. Soon after the U.S. government finished surveying the Upper Mississippi River Valley in 1852, this land became little more than real estate — divided, subdivided, and sold time and again, utterly transformed from prairie to farmland until all that remained were remnants of the native flora and fauna that once thrived there. In 1832, Charles LaTrobe, an Englishman visiting North America for the first time, canoed up the Mississippi River from Prairie du Chien to St. Anthony Falls. He was accompanied by two companions and a crew of French Canadian voyageurs for the journey. In “The Rambler in North America,” a book he published in 1835 about his adventures, LaTrobe vividly describes everything they saw including a spectacular prairie fire viewed from Maiden Rock bluff, a landmark on the eastern shore of Lake Pepin. The morning after their first night camping at the base of the bluff, LaTrobe and his party climbed to the top. From there they watched the fire advance across the opposite shore. “As we looked forth from the summit early in the morning, across the troubled surface of the lake, a dense column of smoke from the opposite side gave us intimation that the prairies were on fire. The spread of the conflagration on the low grounds directly opposite, which drew our attention at intervals during the day, continued unabated and as evening approached, other columns of smoke springing up in all directions, both on the summit of the opposite range of mountains and in the valleys at their feet, showed us that the Indians had taken advantage of the driving wind to fire the country for a great many miles inland.” “At sunset, the flame seemed to have gathered full strength and to have reached a long tract of level grassy prairie nearer the shore upon which it then swiftly advanced, leaving a black path in its trail. Here we saw a bright red line a couple of miles in range, advancing majestically over the wide prairie... we calculated at this time that the fire spread over a tract of nearly twelve miles in length, while the distant glare on the clouded horizon showed that it was raging far inland.
